81 Self-Care Ideas for When You Don’t Want to Leave the House

Self-care is the first thing that goes out the window when I start feeling overwhelmed, especially when I have to take care of my kids or clients. I have a tendency to push things like personal care, health, and hygiene (don’t judge me) to the side.

Then over the next few days, I start falling deeper and deeper into my depression to the point I’m not getting out of bed. I wrap myself up like a burrito, under my blankets, and shut out the world until I’m ready to reemerge.

What helps me get out of my funk is to do something small but still an act of self-care. It shouldn’t be expensive or elaborate at all- something near instant or able to be done in the comfort of my own home.

  1. Drink a glass of water or brew a glass of tea. (I loooove Thai tea as a comfort tea, with a splash of sweetened condensed milk).
  2. Order soup. (Pho noodles and soup is my fav!)
  3. Re-read your favorite book.
  4. Clip your nails. (An alternative to the dangerous “cut your own hair.”)
  5. Warm bath with a bath bomb and a book.
  6. Put your phone on ‘do not disturb’ and put it away.
  7. Blend some fruit with ice. Add a splash of lime. (Healthy slushie!)
  8. Give yourself an Oracle Card reading. (I like this deck.)
  9. Pin your 5 Year Goals.
  10. Take a nap.
  11. Brush your teeth and brush your hair. (especially if it’s been a day or two)
  12. Meditate with some guidance.
  13. Take some photos. (No one has to see them, but it can help you be present.)
  14. Note where there is pressure in your body and breathe deeply to those areas.
  15. Do some yoga from your bed.
  16. Wear something that makes you feel good (or nothing at all!)
  17. Flip through the Book of Tiny Pleasures.
  18. Whatever is nagging you, let yourself know that it can wait half or a full hour, while you recharge.

  25. Watch something new. (I am notorious for starting Hulu trials.)
  26. Look at funny memes on iFunny.
  27. Let your kids binge watch cartoons and not feel guilty about it.
  28. Hire a babysitter for the day. (Ask a close friend or a friend’s teenager.)
  29. Hire a housekeeper to pick up. (Look for people who are just starting out- they charge less.)
  30. Change the sheets and bedding.
  31. Arm knit a chunky blanket. (Grab a kit here.)
  32. Play with stickers.
  33. Declutter the bedroom.
  34. Rearrange furniture (make sure you’re able to physically do it without injury).
  35. Make a blanket fort and lay inside.
  36. Eat cake for breakfast. (One slice! Not the whole cake…)
  37. Make a playlist of happy music.
  38. Get your groceries delivered.
  39. Say, “Fuck it,” and let go of anything that doesn’t serve your self-care right now.
  40. Put on a Beyonce music video and dance along- in your underwear. (make sure your blinds are closed.)

  42. Look at pictures of cute things.
  43. Saying “No” to any new demands.
  44. Pay a debt payment early. (This feels surprisingly great.)
  45. Put old clothes in a box to donate.
  46. Pin different recipes that you want to try (or order out, if you don’t enjoy cooking).
  47. Make a list of 10 things you want to do before the year is over (or if the year is almost over, 10 things you want to do next year).
  48. Listen to a funny podcast. (This one is NSFW but so funny.)
  49. Ugly cry.
  50. Book a therapy session for the future.
  51. Pin motivational and inspirational quotes.
  52. Read motivational and inspirational quotes you previously pinned (see what I did there?)
  53. Make a happy box of e-mails, cards, or letters that made you smile.
  54. Make a list of the top 5 most demanding things you need to do, fold it up, put it aside, and come back to it later. Let it completely leave your mind for now.
  55. Get a personal growth tarot reading (not fortune/future telling, as those can do more harm than good. I recommend my friend, Nik! He is STELLAR and so positive. )
  56. Do a chore that would take less than 5 minutes.
  57. Read fiction.
  58. Brain dump everything in your mind right now on a piece of paper and tuck it away.
  59. Set up a manicure/pedicure appointment for later.

  61. Wash your hair. Shampoo twice. Let the conditioner sit.
  62. Grab your calendar and circle 4 dates where you will devote at least an hour to yourself.

  75. Cancel some subscriptions that you are no longer using
  76. Grab some kitchen supplies and make some play dough

  79. Color (either within the lines or outside the lines- up to you!)
